Manchester Launches Program That Connects Addicts With Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers in New Hampshire

Officials are saying Manchester residents are dying at a rate of two drug overdoses per week — a statistic partly being driven by the nation’s opioid epidemic. In an effort to help individuals who suffer from drug dependence, the Manchester Fire Department recently launched a program that connects addicts with alcohol and drug rehab centers in New Hampshire that offer addiction treatments. Anyone who needs help overcoming addiction and lives in the region can visit any fire station in Manchester, and be connected with resources right away.

Connecting Addicts With Rehab Centers

Drug Rehab Centers

Addicts that arrive at Manchester fire stations will be connected to local rehab centers.

Addicts who feel alone, scared, and unsure about where to turn for help can visit any Manchester fire station and be provided resources without fearing arrest. These individuals can safely dispose of drugs, needles, and other paraphernalia at the fire stations, and work with fire departments on scheduling medical assessments for treatment. The Safe Station program welcomes struggling addicts from residents outside of Manchester, including those from other states.

John Donovan, pastor of Open Door Bible Church, says the program is the most viable place in the region to take someone who needs detox or addiction treatment. Donovan says him and his wife recently drove 66 miles to a Safe Station to deliver a woman going through opioid withdrawal. The pastor said it was the seventh trip he had made in six months to help someone struggling with addiction.

Another local resident named Steven recently walked into the central fire station to seek help for alcohol addiction. The 56-year-old man brought bags of maple syrup in as gifts for the firefighters, who immediately connected Steven with caregivers. Steven was given a bed at a local homeless shelter, and connected with an outpatient addiction treatment program.

Seeking Addiction Treatments at Rehab Centers

Safe Station was created by Chris Hickey of the Manchester Fire Department, who came up with the idea after having an encounter with a man who asked the fire station for help with overcoming addiction. After sharing his idea with the mayor, Hickey launched Safe Station seven months later, and has helped nearly 600 people. Safe Station has become so widely known for helping addicts that other states have come forward to learn more about how the program works.

Most rehab centers offer a variety of therapies and treatments that can be tailored to individuals based on their addiction types. For instance, patients can undergo detox with or without medications that ease withdrawal symptoms, and benefit from counseling and therapy sessions that address underlying causes of addiction. Those who struggle with addiction can choose from inpatient or outpatient programs, or luxury rehab centers that offer holistic therapies such as massage.
