Local Families Affected By Opioid Addiction Get Visits From Drug Counselors, New Hampshire Drug Rehab Centers
A record 488 state residents are expected to die from opioid overdoses in 2016, according to the New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s Office. In an effort to address the state’s opioid crisis, counselors from Catholic Charities New Hampshire are visiting local families and offering addiction treatment services to those in need. Advocates from nearby New Hampshire drug rehab centers are saying this counseling initiative will greatly benefit families affected by the state’s top public health problem.

Connecting Families With Substance Abuse Treatment
Over the next few months, drug counselors from CCNH will conduct a series of presentations on substance abuse and addiction, and discuss how opioid use is affecting families throughout New Hampshire communities. The presentation, called “Families Coping with the Opioid Crisis,” focuses on addiction as a disease, and examines how opioid abuse affects families. The presentation also explores the effects of opioid use on the brain, and helps families understand how to set boundaries and avoid enabling behavior with addicts.
The presentations are being led by six drug counselors trained in substance abuse disorder and who follow the medical model of addiction counseling. The sessions will take place in Epping, Rochester, and Manchester, and may expand to the Upper Valley and North Country in early 2017. All presentations are open to the public, offer an open forum for questions, and last for approximately one hour and 30 minutes.
Rev. John J. Mahoney Jr., director of clinical services at CCNH, says his organization treats struggling addicts from every walk of life and faith tradition. Instead of waiting for patients to come to them, counselors from CCNH go into communities to offer services to families whose loved ones are suffering from opioid addiction. Mahoney, also a clinical mental health counselor and canon lawyer, says he’s committed to the initiative after having witnessed miracles that take place during counseling sessions between counselors and those in need of addiction treatment.
Understanding the Value of Addiction Treatment
Opioid addiction treatment not only helps addicts overcome physical dependence on opioids, but guides them through overcoming other life problems that may have led to addiction in the first place. Many addiction treatment centers often integrate family counseling with treatment so recovering addicts can repair and rebuild relationships with loved ones. Family counseling also teaches family members of addicts how to support their loved ones as they work toward overcoming addiction and achieving sobriety.
Certified prevention specialist Susan McKeown says the CCNH initiative is an ideal way to offer families the skills and education they need to overcome opioid abuse. McKeown, who co-founded a local substance abuse support group in Manchester 14 years ago, says that for every person affected by opioid abuse, there’s a family being affected as well. She adds that family counseling and therapy often go far in helping recovering addicts maintain long-term sobriety.
