Nashua Safe Stations Program Connects Addicts With Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers in New Hampshire
Opioid abuse has become a major epidemic in Nashua, according to city mayor Jim Donchess. Since September, the city has seen 14 drug overdose deaths related to opioid use. Connecting Nashua Addicts With Substance Abuse Treatment
Addicts in Nashua can arrive at certain fire stations and be connected to treatment centers.
Nashua’s new program, called “Safe Stations,” allows individuals who suffer from substance abuse to walk into any Nashua fire station and be connected instantly with addiction treatment programs. Individuals at risk for an overdose are taken to the nearest hospital emergency room, while those not at risk for an overdose are taken to nearby shelters or addiction treatment centers. Medical detoxification services are also available to addicts who need help overcoming physical dependency on substances.
Since the launch of Safe Stations in Nashua earlier this fall, over one dozen individuals have approached local fire stations for help. Manchester launched its own Safe Stations program in May, and has connected over 700 people with addiction treatment, according to city officials.
Donchess said in a recent statement that Nashua residents from all neighborhoods and walks of life are struggling with substance abuse. He says front-line professionals frequently inform him about the city’s opioid crisis, and that large numbers of criminals are being arrested for drug trafficking in Nashua and neighboring areas. The Safe Stations program will also help reduce first responders’ use of an opioid overdose reversal drug called Narcan, which Donchess says is being administered an average of 30 times per month in Nashua.
